From Crispus Attucks, the first American killed by British soldiers in the War of Independence, to Naomi Anderson, a pioneer in the black woman's suffrage movement, to Mary Elizabeth Bowser, who risked her life as a spy during the Civil War, each story is told with Turner's trademark subtlety, sophistication.
